While thousands of people came to Jesus during His ministry to receive from Him, this particular woman came to Jesus to give.

Matthew 26:1-16

Reference: v.13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: When I was a young girl I had number of quotes written up in my bedroom. One of them was this:

“When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.”

Although I was probably only aged ten at the time, and was a long way off considering death, this quote still had a profound impact on me. It make me think of the impact I would have on others and what people would think of me when I passed away.

While this is not the complete philosophy of how I live my life, it is certainly a cute way of encouraging people to live a life that has an impact on the people around us.

Application: There are many people who were impacted by Jesus’ life and ministry. In this first part of Matthew 26 we actually hear of a woman who had an impact on Jesus’ life.

While thousands of people came to Jesus during His ministry to receive from Him, this particular woman came to Jesus to give.

I love that Jesus comes to her defence and places her in the pages of history.

While the quote in my bedroom encouraged me to have an impact on people around me, my real calling would be – like this woman with the perfume – to have an impact on Jesus. As a believer, I want to live life in such a way that I am able to be constantly giving over everything to Christ.

Prayer: Lord, our page in history may not be very long or significant, but may we live in such a way that it proclaims Your name. Amen.
