My father seemed to have a magical ability to know when the red light was to turn green.

Explore: We grew up in a very small country town in Western Victoria, Australia. The town was so small we didn’t even have any traffic lights.
When we would go on a family trip to a big city it was always boring having to wait to go through so much traffic.
My father, however, seemed to have a magical ability to know when the red light was to turn green.
He would suddenly count down, “Three, two, one…” and then he would blow into the air and the light would turn green. It was quite remarkable.
Having grown up and moved to the city I now realise my dad was not the traffic light whisperer. He would look at the lights going in the other direction and once they had turned red he would count slowly back from three and “hey presto” the lights would change. While it wasn’t magic, it is a technique I now use all the time!
Application: I really value wise people, and I think that’s why this passage in 1 Kings 3 has always been one of my favourite Bible passages. King Solomon was presented with a very difficult situation. Instead of being rash or apathetic he used his wisdom to get to the resolution.
We all have access to wisdom. If we call on God and rely on the Holy Spirit then we can receive divine wisdom.
It is this same wisdom that made the people stand in awe of Solomon and it is this same wisdom that can help us through some really difficult decisions. We don’t need to do it on our own, call upon the wisdom of God and He will open up more than you will ever know.
Prayer: Lord, Solomon acknowledged that wisdom was a great gift we could receive from You. Help us to also strive for Your wisdom so we can make the world we live in a better place. Amen.
What do you need wisdom for today?
