You Never Know

I often wonder what will become of them when they grow up.

Genesis 22:20-24

Reference: Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor. (‭Genesis‬ ‭22‬:‭23‬ NIV)

Explore: I now have four children in my home. And they are all completely different.

One is a shopaholic. She loves a sale and can never pass up a good bargain.

One talks non-stop. He asks questions of everyone and anyone and constantly makes noise.

One loves animals. While he is mischievous and witty, he has a kind heart.

One is energetic. He never stops moving and is adventurous in where he’s going.

All four are very different. I often wonder what will become of them when they grow up.

I’ve already experienced the dreaded teen years with one. This can be gruelling and often distracts children with insecurity. But once we are beyond that, I pray each child will be confident and find their passion.

Application: You never know how children’s lives will pan out. You can only hope and pray for a fulfilling future. They start off so small but have their whole lives before them.

In Genesis 22 we hear of Abraham’s sister-in-law having eight sons. I’m sure they all had different personalities and abilities.

The final one was Rebekah’s father. Rebekah became a well-known woman of the Bible who showed great character.

Did her grandmother know the quality that would come from her last born son? Probably not. But it’s likely that Rebekah’s character was something familiar in all the generations of her family.

We cannot know what will happen in the future, but we can do our best to instil great love, grace and passion in all our children.

Prayer: Lord, while living out our own calling may we bring hope for a bright future for all the children we encounter in our lives. Amen.

How has your childhood character helped equip you for your life ahead?
