Who’s On The Phone

Even though you can only hear one side of the conversation you are often able to determine who they are talking to.

Job 27:1-23

Reference:  v.5 I will never admit you are in the right;  till I die, I will not deny my integrity. (NIV Bible)

Explore:  Whenever someone is speaking on the phone I always try to work out who they are speaking to.  Even though you can only hear one side of the conversation you are often able to determine who they are talking to by the content of the conversation but also by how they are speaking.  When I speak to my mate Penny my husband will instantly know it’s her on the other end of the phone as I start talking like she does and telling our personal jokes.  When my sister worked in an open plan office her colleagues could always tell when she was talking to me because it was like we spoke a totally different language together.  I am still Linda Bailey when I speak to these different people, it’s just that I relate to them on different levels that leads to different language and a different intonation to my voice.

Application:  I don’t think I am alone by changing slightly depending on who I am with.  The challenge in being a person of integrity is to make sure you stay true to who you are and not change your core believes depending on who you are associating with.  Job had very contradictory beliefs leveled at him from his friends but he stayed true to his faith and his understanding of God.  There are many different people in our lives and we may change our language or our humour when we are around them.  But we must be careful not to change our core beliefs between social circles as that is showing a false integrity.  Just as Job was consistent God also desires for us to be consistent and committed to Him at all times.

Prayer:  Lord, just as you are consistent in Your love and mercy, may we too be consistent in our faith and devotion.  Amen.

What area of your life lacks consistency?
