Who Are You?

We can put any kind of label on ourselves, but our actions will speak the truth.

Jonah 1:1-17

Reference: “He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”” ‭‭Jonah‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I recently had a run in with a friend who is also in ministry. He believed I should not consider myself a Christian because of a certain interpretation I had of God’s love.

In truth, I struggled to see how my friend could call himself a Christian and be judgmental, but I certainly wasn’t about to tell him how far from the truth I thought he was.

We can put any kind of label on ourselves, but our actions will speak the truth.

I could call myself an athlete but unless I can play a certain type of sport at a decent level, I’m lying.

Just because you are in a garage, doesn’t make you a car! Likewise just because you go to church, doesn’t make you a Christian.

To truly be like Christ you need to act like Him, not just speak about Him.

Application: As I was reading through this first chapter of Jonah I realised that Jonah believed in God right from the beginning. That didn’t mean, however, that he acted in a Godly manner.

He professed his belief in God but still ran the other way from God’s calling.

Let us not do the same. Let us stand up for what we truly believe, no matter who we are in front of. May we not let others determine our actions but always base them on what God would have us do.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I confess with my mouth, but speak differently with my actions. In everything I do may people see I am committed to following You. Amen.

How can you improve your actions to be more like that which God is calling you to?
