When Disagreements Arise

I am perfect and I’m not afraid to say exactly what I think!

Psalm 7:1-17

Reference: …if I have repaid my ally with evil or without cause have robbed my foe— (Psalm 7:4 NIV)

Explore: Have you ever had an imaginary argument with someone in your head? It’s a little schizophrenic but it actually happens quite frequently!

If I feel that someone has mistreated me or judged me unfairly I will dream about confronting them. Of course, in my imagination I totally win the fight and decimate their arguments.

In my mind I become a rebuttal queen and nothing they say can pull me down.

Does this happen to you? Or is it just me? It’s a way to make me feel better about myself even though the issue is no closer to being resolved!

It’s in these imaginary arguments that I can do no wrong. I am perfect and I’m not afraid to say exactly what I think!

Application: When someone has hurt you it’s very easy to only see your side of the story. You quickly play the victim and see the other as the bully.

There may be times when this actually is the case, however, the majority of the time we are just not seeing the other person’s perspective. And let’s face it, it’s so much easier to notice the fault in someone else, than in ourselves.

This Psalm is a great reminder to look at our own responsibility as well as asking God for help. The psalmist clearly feels pained about something that has happened, but prays that God would look at their actions as well as those of their enemy.

I can’t say that I would always be willing for God to look at my actions, as I know I can always deal with things better.  It shows incredible integrity to open yourself up, like the psalmist did, and allow God to see our true motives.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You see all things and understand each side of the argument. Help us to look beyond ourselves and see the other person’s perspective. Amen.

When have you been in disagreement with another?
