What’s The Big Idea?

She had taken a good idea and made it amazing!

Genesis 17:17-22

Reference: And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” (‭Genesis‬ ‭17‬:‭18‬ NIV)

Explore: I once had a good idea to go on a holiday with my mother and sister. I didn’t mind where we would go, I just thought it would be nice to get away.

I spoke to my sister and I could tell she was excited about the idea. We talked through some travel considerations and then I left it with her.

The next time I spoke to her she had taken a good idea and made it amazing! She’d looked into a number of locations we could visit, villas we could stay in and tourist attractions we could enjoy.

What I had thought would be a nice time away, my incredible sister had turned into an amazing, memorable adventure.

Applications: It’s good to know our own limitations and recognise others’ strengths. While I enjoy spending time with my family, my sister is skilled in planning great holidays.

Abram needed to recognise his own limitations when it came to God. He thought it would be great for God to bless his current situation, but God had so much more in store for Abram.

We can never out imagine God. He can take our good ideas and make them great. He can take our great ideas and make them unbelievable!

While Abram put a limit on God’s plan for him, the great thing he did was to include God in his plans. It was then that God was able to make something good truly great.

Prayer: Lord, I open up my plans to You. May I not hold too tightly to my ideas but allow You to work through my life. Amen.

What plans could you ask God to take from good to great?
