We Make Drill Bits

There was a company that worked hard making drill bits. They did it well and became very successful

They engaged with a consultant to help them navigate the next season of the company. When the consultant asked the company what they did they confidently answered, “We make drill bits.”

The consultant pushed them further. “But what do you really do?” After much discussion they realised that the core of their business was to make holes.

Because of this change in mindset this company went on to become the first producers of laser drill technology. It was a step outside their normal production but still fulfilled their core business.

So often we can get caught up with what we do, day in and day out. But what are we really called to do. We can always fill our days but what is our greater, over-arching purpose.

Understanding that we make drill bits is good but discerning that we make holes is even better. It opens up a whole new scope of what we can achieve.

Lord, open our minds to the greater purpose You have created us to live out. May we work diligently at our daily tasks but may we draw from Your diverse creativity to continue to extend ourselves. Amen.

What is it you really do?
