Walking in the Dark
Darkness will enclose around me and no matter where I turn there is total blackness.
Reference: v.1 Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who minister by night in the house of the Lord. (Psalm 134:1 TNIV)
Explore: When I leave home to go to work each morning, it’s dark. No matter what time of the year, I head off so early in the morning that the sun has not yet risen.
We have a special light on a timer just outside our front door that helps to guide me through the darkness to my car. However, it only stays on for about one minute before it turns off again.
If it takes me longer to gather all my gear together then I will be halfway to the car when the light turns off.
Darkness will enclose around me and no matter where I turn there is total blackness.
Part of me just wants to stop and stand still. If I don’t move, then I won’t trip over or fall. I won’t knock into anything, I won’t hurt myself if I just stop.
However, stopping really isn’t an option. I can’t imagine my colleagues or my boss would be impressed if I didn’t turn up in time for work, just because it was dark!
While moving around in the dark is not enjoyable, sometimes it is unavoidable for me.
Application: There are times in our lives when we go through a season of darkness. Troubles come our way and it’s like all the light has gone from our lives.
But this does not mean that we stop doing what God has called us to do. If we stopped living for God every time things got tough, then we would miss opportunities to serve Him.
In Psalm 134 it says to praise God even when we minister in darkness. I thought this was true when we serve God, even in tough times.
Life is not always easy, but the opportunities to love God and love others never diminish. In fact, when we love in times of trouble we often find it helps us through the darkness.
Prayer: Lord, may we draw on Your light when we feel that we are surrounded by darkness. May we never cease to share Your love, even when we go through times of trial. Amen.
