Month after month passed by and I had given up hope that she would call
Reference: Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my face— in their misery they will earnestly seek me.” (Hosea 5:15 NIV)
Explore: My friend and I had known each other for quite a long time. We loved hanging out and knew everything about each other.
But when she got a boyfriend, it was like she totally disappeared from my life. He suddenly took priority and every spare moment she had, she spent with him.
After quite a few months of trying to get her attention, I gave up. I decided that she knew where I was and, although I was hurt, I would leave it up to her to make contact.
Month after month passed by and I had given up hope that she would call, until one day it finally happened. I was glad to hear her voice and we started chatting about what was going on in our lives.
That’s when she dropped the bombshell. She was engaged! I hardly knew this guy and now she was going to spend the rest of her life with him.
What hurt most was that this news was the only reason she had bothered to call me.
Application: There is no denying that people can be hurtful, even when it’s not intentional. This time I was on the receiving end, but I’ve had my fair share of being the inconsiderate one too.
God goes out of His way every day to get our attention, and yet, we can be hurtful and ignore Him too. It may not be intentional – just like my friend – and yet it is just as hurtful.
It’s time we started to look beyond ourselves and look towards God. He has done so much for us that He deserves our attention. I’m sure the last thing we want to do is hurt God, but that means we need to start making different decisions with our time and priorities.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we turn our backs on You. Just like Your people long ago, we can be selfish and only look to serve ourselves. May we turn from our wrong and always look to focus upon You. Amen.
How have you hurt God?
