Vocal Day Of Rest

Not talking for a whole day can be a challenge

Psalm 29:1-11

Reference: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. (Psalm 29:4 NIV)

Explore: For the last two years I have been struggling with nodules. These are small bumps on my vocal cords that make my voice husky.

You can imagine that working in radio during this time has been frustrating. Not only does it sound like I’m constantly unwell, but it also means I lose the ability to change the sound of my voice to create inflection or emphasis on particular words. I know they say timing is everything in comedy but, trust me, vocal flexibility also helps!

As well as speech therapy I have undergone a number of days of vocal rest. Not talking for a whole day can be a challenge for me, but even more so for my family.

Charades can be fun when you’re playing a game with friends, but when you’re trying to communicate with your husband around daily activities, it only brings out frustration.

It’s amazing how much I could communicate with my children without talking. They thought it was intriguing to watch, but when they tried to get away with something, it was interesting to see how much a certain look could get my message across!

I’ve certainly been reminded that the voice is a powerful tool. We take it for granted, but used wisely, our voice can have a strong impact.

Application: After my vocal days of rest it was funny to then find myself reading this Psalm about God’s voice. It speaks of God’s powerful, mighty voice, but I must admit that, at times, I think God has vocal days of rest.

I’d love to be able to converse with him like I do my husband, but that’s not how I find God communicates to me.
One of my boys asked me last week how we can see God. I explained how I see God through creation. When I see a tall, strong tree it helps me see how strong the God who created it must be.

I guess this is the same with God’s voice. Through creation I hear his whisper, through the storm I can hear his power and through other people I’m reminded of his wisdom.

The voice of God is not always an audible group of words but it’s His way of communicating His character and purpose.

Prayer: Lord God, there are times when I tune out Your voice and find myself at a loss. May I pick up on Your communication so that I can live according to Your purpose. Amen.

What is God trying to say to you today?
