The Unknown Future

We’ve certainly had our ups and downs

Psalm 88:1-18

Reference: You have taken from me friend and neighbor— darkness is my closest friend. (‭Psalm‬ ‭88‬:‭18‬ NIV)

Explore: I’m in a pretty good place at the moment. We’ve certainly had our ups and downs but we’ve come out the other side in a healthier place.

I’m looking forward to the future and am excited about some changes that are happening soon. While there is still much to do I feel I have the resources to really make a difference. Good for me!

While life is sitting pretty for me at the moment, it is not the case for many others. Even those close to me are experiencing grief and pain in their circumstances.

And reality dictates that there will come a time when I find myself back in that challenging place.

Application: Psalm 88 reminds me that life does not always go according to plan. Challenges come and life gets tough and sometimes you just want to check out of the pain.

There is no answer at the end of this psalm, and that is often the case in life. There are no answers, there is no clarity.

But, God is there.

In all the pain the psalmist does not forget to call out to God. When we are feeling like we’re at the end of despair we know we can call out to God.

He may not give us an answer straight away but He will incline His ear towards us and sit with our pain.

Prayer: Lord, may we experience Your comfort when times are tough. And when things are going well for us, may we be Your comfort to another in need. Amen.

Are you in a place where you need comfort or can give comfort?
