Treated Equally

My mother never wanted money or possessions to come between us

Joshua 17:1-18

Reference: “They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.” ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭17:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: My parents were always very good at treating us three children equally. It wasn’t always easy but they tried their best.

As a GP my mother had seen numerous families fall apart when a loved one passed away. Not because of grief but due to arguments over who deserved to inherit what. My mother never wanted money or possessions to come between us, so she was always fair and honest with every gift she gave.

At Christmas time she would all give us the same amount of gifts. If she was to give money to one she would always give to the other two as well. I cannot fault her commitment in giving to us equally and fairly.

Application: In Joshua 17 we read of Joshua giving fairly, even though he didn’t have to. One of the families in a tribe had only produced daughters rather than sons.

I assume it would have been a given for them not to get their required allotment, and so, they were left out. But when they questioned Joshua he was fair and respectful and gave them the land for their family.

It can take sacrifice to give equally, but it can save a great deal of turmoil for the future. Only just two days ago I heard a radio announcer declare which child was their favourite. The damage those words can do can be irreversible.

Let us learn from Joshua, and my mother, and work hard for equality. It can give life to someone and change their world if done with integrity and love.

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to see what it is like for those not treated justly. May I be their voice and an example of how we can all treat others with love and respect. Amen.

When have you been treated unjustly?
