I have a terrible track record with tradesmen. For some reason I just can’t seem to get good tradies to help when I need them. Every single time I need someone to come to my house I get stood up.
Now, I know tradies are known for turning up late, but my tradies don’t turn up at all! I’ll call and book an appointment but when the time comes, no one turns up! I’ll always call to follow up and I’ve received every excuse under the sun – another job had gone over time, family is unwell, had to cover work from another staff member…
No matter what the excuse is the result is still the same – no one turns up! It’s not that I don’t believe the excuses, these things happen in life. What I struggle with is that they don’t communicate the change. They just don’t turn up.
It’s so frustrating.
One time it took me three appointments for a tradie to come to my home. In the end I asked him if he was actually going to turn up otherwise I would ask someone else. He started to defend himself but then realised I had a fair point.
Fortunately, I have a much better track record with God. I can call on Him at any time. I don’t have to wait a couple of days or even next week, He’s already present before I even think to call on Him.
We are made in His image and therefore we’re called to be more reliable than my tradie experience. Yes, we need to put everything in perspective but we need to be true to our word. Let our yes be yes and our no be no (Matthew 5:37). No matter what work you are in, or who you see throughout the day, you can represent God with your honesty and reliability.
Lord, make me more like You. Help me to treat others as I would like to be treated. Amen.
How reliable would you say you are?
