It was more about me being interested and no one else being available!
Reference: v.21 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: When I was fresh out of high school I started getting involved in a new church. Within my first year there I went from teaching Religious Education in school to helping out in the children’s ministry to taking over the children’s church to overseeing the church’s whole Children’s Ministry. I can remember feeling totally overwhelmed and completely under-qualified. It wasn’t that I had an amazing resume in children’s ministry, it was more about me being interested and no one else being available! However over the next ten years I worked at making children’s ministry a priority in the church and expanding our connections into the community.
Application: I find time and time again that I am called into roles that I am not qualified for. One of the greatest quotes a friend told me one day was, “God doesn’t call those who are able, He enables those He calls.” When I hear a story like Joash’s from 2 Kings 11, where he became king at the age of 7, I don’t feel like my situations have been too bad! The great thing about God is that He is not restricted by our age, gender or social standing. If He was willing to bring His own son into the world through a 16 year old poor girl then I think He is willing to move through you and me.
Prayer: Lord, we are humbled that You would choose us to be a part of Your plan. May we be open to Your leading and willing to learn from Your wisdom. Amen.
What do you feel under-qualified for?
