Thomas the Tank Engine

There is one episode that really upset me.

Proverbs 16:1-33

Reference: “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: With a two-year old in the house, we’ve started to watch a lot of Thomas the Tank Engine. Now, don’t get me started on the attitude of the namesake of this show, but there is one episode that really upset me.

Poor Henry (one of the trains) was worried about getting his paint ruined. It started to rain and he drove into a tunnel and wouldn’t come out.

His driver asked him to continue down the tracks but he wouldn’t. The Controller came to the tunnel and asked him to move but he didn’t budge.

People and trains alike got behind him and tried to push him out but he just put his brakes on.

The Controller got so angry he told Henry he could stay in the tunnel forever. So they removed the tracks from in front of Henry and they bricked up the front of the tunnel. Every time trains drove past the tunnel they would toot at Henry who sadly looked over the brick wall.

The voice over came on at the end of the episode to explain that Henry was said, but reminds the viewers that really Henry just got what he deserved!!

Application: Now, for those of you like me, who like a happy ending, you will be relieved to know in the very next episode things start looking up for Henry! But what a terrible episode that explains the harsh reality of what happens when we make poor choice.

I get that this is just a children’s story, but this is a story without the loving grace of God! It is true there are times when we make choices that lead to negative times – Proverbs reminds us over and over again how important it is for us to make wise choices.

But the hope we live with, the grace we receive through Jesus, is that even when we make poor choices, He will still see us through. Yes, let us be mindful to make wise decisions for our futures, but let’s not forget we have the love and grace of God in our future too.

God does not take away our future path, like the Controller did with Henry. He always paves another way for us.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are not a Controller who gives us what we deserve. May we be mindful of our decisions today in the hope that our future will be right with You. Amen.

Have you ever taken a path that seemed right at the time, but really was not for the best?
