There’s Something More

I was recently reading the story of the rich young ruler (Luke 18:18-30). This is the story in the gospels where a wealthy, religious man comes up to Jesus to ask him what he must do to get eternal life.

Jesus tells him about a couple of the key commandments. The young man tells him he knows them all and has kept every one.

This struck me as something new in this text from what I’d noticed before. This young man wasn’t just rich – although that was how he was described – but he was very religious as well. He had learned the scriptures and he had kept all the commands.

He had been faithful when many around him had not bothered to keep the faith as diligently as him. He was intelligent as he had the capacity to remember the commands and put them into practice. He believed in God.

And yet he still asked “what more?”

We often talk about the “God hole” in people’s lives. A place in our heart that can only be complete if we believe in God.

But this man did believe in God. But he still felt there was something more.

God is all we need but in knowing Him we know there is a greater calling on our lives. He doesn’t call us to blend in or just live like our neighbours. He calls us to live with the extravagant love, grace and peace He has given to us. And that means more than just keeping all the commands.

God is all you need but, when you know God’s heart then you want to live out His love and live like him as much as possible. The challenge is to determine what that calling is for each of us.

Lord, You are all we need. When we fully immerse ourselves in You then we are spurred on to be more like You in how we act, what we say and how we live. Amen.

What is God calling you to do?
