Let’s be honest, it’s when you find only half a slug in your meal that you really need to worry!
Reference: v.13 that you forget the Lord your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror every day
because of the wrath of the oppressor,
who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor? (TNIV Bible)
Explore: My daughter will eat pretty much anything… unless there is a bug in it! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to enjoy the consumption of insects, however, if there is a bug in my home-cooked meal I’m happy to push it aside and consume the meal around it.
Having grown up in the country we had freshly grown, organic vegetables every single night. Finding a caterpillar in the lettuce or a slug in the broccoli was a regular part of an evening meal.
Let’s be honest, it’s when you find only half a slug in your meal that you really need to worry!
However, our daughter is so appalled by finding an insect in her meal that it seems to override every other delicious morsel on her plate. The tiny creature overwhelms the meal and she instantly loses her appetite.
I will try to convince her of the delicacies that are available to her that have not been contaminated, and yet, she’s not easily swayed. One tiny bug will cover up all the great things she’s still got before her.
Application: Sometimes I can react in a similar way when it comes to trials and challenges. I am blessed with so many great things in my life, and yet, one little hurdle can send me into a spin of catastrophe.
I can get so focussed on the one thing that is going wrong that I am blinded to all the great things that are going right in my life. The caterpillar-sized issue gets blown totally out of proportion.
It’s then that I need to be reminded that no matter how big I think my problem is, God is bigger. Even when my problem seems as big as a mountain… God is still bigger.
We will always have more blessings than disasters in our lives because our God is greater than anything we have to face. Compared to Him, everything is bug sized!
Prayer: Lord, troubles and concerns can so easily consume me. May I not feel overwhelmed by their presence, but know that You are greater than any issue I have to face today. Amen.
What issue seems to be overwhelming you today?
