With the right amount of rooms, simple landscaping and perfect layout for our needs it is hard to think of a better house for us.
Reference: v.2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” (TNIV Bible)
Explore: I love my house. It is the first house we have ever owned, and we were fortunate enough to build it exactly how we wanted.
With the right amount of rooms, simple landscaping, and perfect layout for our needs, it is hard to think of a house that would suit us better.
A few years ago we had some terrible fires burn through our state. The closest one was only about 20kms from our house. Hearing of the death and destruction that these fires caused, it really put things in perspective for me.
Whilst it would have been terrible to lose our home, I know it would have been so much more devastating to lose a loved one.
My house is wonderful and I feel so blessed to have it, however, it pales in significance when you compare it to friendship, health, safety and life. These are the things that are truly worth focusing on in our lives, rather than great physical possessions.
Application: I’m not sure why the disciples were drawing Jesus’ attention to the synagogue building, but even He was able to put such important structures into perspective. Yes, a place of worship is a great thing, however, when God wants to make a statement, even a great building will not be able to withstand His power.
It is easy for us to give great attention to the tangible things in our lives, and yet, God reminds us that the most important aspect is a relationship with Him. Be blessed with what you have, but never allow it to take precedence over your connection to the Saviour.
Prayer: Lord, our lives can so easily be filled with possessions and belongings. May we never desire to have more of them, but to have more of You in our lives. Amen.
What possession do you put too much emphasis upon?
