The Perfect Family

Throughout this time it was like I had a black cloud over my life.

Numbers 30:1-16

Reference: v.5 But if her father forbids her when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I don’t think there is any such thing as a perfect family.  I do love my family, and all the individuals within it, but we are by no means perfect.  Last year we had a bit of a tough period with our teenage foster daughter.  While we loved her and supported her, we could see that she was making some poor choices.  Throughout this time it was like I had a black cloud over my life.  There were many things that were going well for me – work, health and church – however everything seemed a little darker as I knew that my daughter was not being the best that she could be.

Application: God has a high regard for family.  He tells us to honor our parents, to not exasperate our children and even here in Numbers, He shows the high regard for not separating a family due to previous vows that have been made.  It’s no wonder that my whole life felt uneasy when things were upset within our family.  We cannot make all the decisions for our children, but it seems to be an important part of our faith for us to support our family in everything that we do.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the family that we have.  While we may not always get along, help us to respect the people we have grown up with, and help us to build a stronger bond with the relatives we are blessed with.  Amen.

How well connected is your family at the moment?
