If you could only choose one sweet to eat right now, which would you choose?
Reference: v.3
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest
is my beloved among the young men.
I delight to sit in his shade,
and his fruit is sweet to my taste. (NIV Bible)
Explore: The other night I went out for dinner with our church small group. The restaurant we went to had a huge double cabinet of sweet delicacies.
As we were all trying to be healthy, none of us indulged… but that didn’t stop us from looking!
It was hard not to drool as we feasted our eyes upon the cheesecake, doughnuts, apricot Danish, lemon slice, shortbread, hedgehog, mud cake, lemon tart, blueberry muffins, macaroons and truffle balls.
I slyly asked each member of the group one question: “If you could only choose one sweet to eat right now, which would you choose?”
One couldn’t go past the cheesecake, another eyed off the doughnut, while another declared their love of mud cake. For me it was the truffle balls all the way. No amount of will power can ever hold me back if there are truffles on offer.
It was quite interesting that even though we all loved the idea of sweets, we all chose something quite different.
Application: When I read chapter two of the poetic writing of Song of Solomon, I appreciated how the female voice related her partner to an apple tree that is sweet to her taste. Out of all the fruits she chose the apple, just like out of all the sweets I chose the truffles.
It’s like if I was presented with a long line of gentlemen, I couldn’t think of anyone more fitting to be my partner than my husband. Even though I know lots of really great guys, men who would be and have been chosen by other partners, the pick of the bunch for me would be Cameron.
If you compare this to our relationship with God it tells us that God would pick you every single time. God loves you and is so delighted by you that you are sweet to His taste.
It’s hard to think that someone would love us so completely like this, but I can assure you that God truly loves you that much. He loves you greater than a mother loves her son and greater than a husband loves his wife. All we have to do is reach out and be embraced by the One who loves us most.
Prayer: Lord, it is often difficult to see how you could possibly love us. We constantly do the wrong thing and stuff things up. We are humbled by the unconditional love you have for us. May we be willing to embrace that love and learn to pass it on to others. Amen.
How do you express your love to others? How does God express His love to you?
