I wonder how many people would have cast their eyes over this painting.
Reference: Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. (Psalm 111:2 NIV)
Explore: The Mona Lisa would have to be one of the most well known paintings in the whole world. In fact, it’s said that it is “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world”.
While it was painted in the early 1500s, it now hangs in the Louvre in Paris. People visit this famous museum just to cast their eyes across this valuable piece of art.
I know the Louvre would have their attendance figures, but I wonder how many people would have cast their eyes over this painting. It would have to be in the millions, if not billions.
Some people might just glance at it briefly while they are walking past, while others will stop and stare for a long period of time. There are scholars who have spent hours reflecting on the Mona Lisa, talking about it and writing lengthy articles about it.
No matter what you think about Da Vinci’s work, his painting continues to mesmerise humanity.
Application: There are many things in our world that are worth pondering upon. But no artist is as great as our Lord and Creator. His works are truly great.
There is no painter more talented, no sculptor as gifted, no musician as famous as the work of our God.
The great thing is, you don’t have to travel long distances or pay exorbitant prices to view God’s work. It’s readily available to all who are willing to experience it.
Look into the eyes of the next person you see, marvel at the height of the tallest tree. God’s creation is worth pondering and reminds us of the greatness of our Maker.
Prayer: Lord, Your works are amazing. May we never stop marvelling at Your creation. Amen.
What is something beautiful you have seen lately?
