The Heart of a Man

The heart of this gentleman was reflected throughout his whole life.

Proverbs 27:1-27

Explore: I was recently at the funeral of an elderly gentleman. I had only known him in his later years, so I was fascinated to hear the story of his life in his eulogy.

He had fallen head over heels for his wife the moment he had met her. She came to his house to sing for their family – something they did in days of old – and it had been love at first sight.

He had a number of children whom he loved and supported. He’d grieved when he had to bury one of them, but it made him treasure his other children even more.

Just when he thought he was fully blessed, he discovered the joy of grandchildren. He was proud of each one of them and paraded them before his friends as often as possible.

He was generous and kind and as loyal as anyone could be. When he passed away in his nineties the room was filled with people who had been fortunate enough to be loved by this man.

Application: I don’t often think of end of my life or what would be said at my funeral, but the heart of this gentleman was reflected throughout his whole life. In every facet and in every age, this man had shown love and loyalty.

Our lives are the example of what is in our hearts. We’ve all met people who say one thing but do the other – heck, we’re all guilty of that. But when you look at someone’s actions you are able to understand their heart.

Our aim as Christians is to reflect Jesus from our hearts. That means every action, every word and every intention is to reflect the heart of Jesus.

In that I fall short every day, but as the sun rises again I have another opportunity to represent God here on earth.

Prayer: Lord, convert my heart so it reflects Your love and Your grace. May I go into each day with a renewed vigour to show Jesus to those I meet. Amen.

What would people see reflected in your heart today?
