The Hardest Commandment to Keep

I always end up comparing myself to other people’s great characteristics and wishing I was more like them.

Exodus 20:1-26

Reference: v.16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: Lucy has the most amazing eye lashes; Cameron has the quickest wit; Kym has the flattest stomach; Ruth has the most caring nature; Ann has the most dramatic facial expressions; Andy has the most creative mind; Kel has the best one-liners; Penny has the greatest self-confidence; Russ has the friendliest nature; Derryn can jump the highest… I am blessed to have so many amazing people in my life, but it’s hard not to wish that I was as good as them.

Application: While I know that we are commanded to keep all the commandments, it’s the final one that I find the toughest. Do not covet = do not want what someone else has. This does not mean that I tend to steal from others, because tangible items are not what I crave. But I always end up comparing myself to other people’s great characteristics and wishing I was more like them.  God created me and there are many great things about me. He wants me to feel blessed with who I am and the potential I have, rather than how I could potentially be like someone else.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I break Commandment 10 and wish to be something that I’m not. Help me to know that Your design is best for me. Amen.
