The good life

What does it really mean to live a 'good life'?

James 3.13-18

Reference:  v. 13 Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

Explore:  The good life.  When I think of those words the image of me standing beside a house by a lake with a drink in my hand as I watch the sunset reflect it's golden colours across the sky.  I'm not quite sure that was the 'good life' mentioned here in James.  It's easy for us to interpret the wisdom of the Bible into our own understanding in the 21st Century, however when we really look at the 'good life' being that of humility from wisdom, it takes on a whole other meaning.

Application:  While it would be nice to think that a good and blessed life is one filled with every contentment we desire, we only have to look at Jesus' life on Earth to see that the 'good life' often brings confrontation, disagreement and even the most severe persecution.  And yet, we are still called to follow Christ and live life in reflection of His.  He never promised easiness, but He does give us a sunset at the close of every day!!

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for being there in every struggle and persecution I come up against.  Help me to persevere towards a 'good godly life' not just an easy life here on earth.  Amen.
