: The Family Law
is a new Australian TV series based off a book by Benjamin Law. It follows the dysfunctional world of a Chinese-Australian family through the eyes of the 14-year-old middle child, Benjamin.
In the very first episode I could see each one of the members of this family of seven had an interesting character. But none more than the mother, Jenny Law.
In her clipped English she spoke her mind about everything and everyone. No subject was sacred and she gave her opinion loudly and proudly.
Not surprisingly, some of her opinions were not popular. You would certainly need to have a thick skin if you were around her a lot.
Application: I then read the first verse of Proverbs 12 and wondered if Jenny Law had not written some of this scripture herself: “whoever hates correction is stupid.” Wow, there’s no softening that blow!
And yet, when it comes to gaining wisdom in life I think a bit of thick skin is helpful. We come, knowing we don’t have everything sorted out yet, that’s why we need God’s wisdom.
The truths the writer of Proverbs dishes out can be quite blunt, but why beat around the bush when he is helping us to improve our lives.
Let’s get a bit brash and a bit honest with ourselves. As we continue to read through Proverbs let’s fess up when we may find ourselves in the “stupid” category, but let’s also praise God that He has given us the understanding of how to move to wisdom.
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the many stupid things I have done. Help me to move towards knowledge and wisdom in You. Amen.
When have you found yourself in the “stupid” category?
