That’s Not Right

There are people who are greedy and selfish and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Luke 6:27-36

Reference: Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. (‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭30‬ NIV)

Explore: My mum recently got a scam phone call. They said her computer could be corrupted and she needed to go and turn it on.

While I had heard of scammers making these types of calls, my mother hadn’t. She was concerned for her computer and tried to do what the scammer told her.

Fortunately for my mum, she wasn’t technically able to do what they instructed her to do, so she told them she would call her tech support. The scam had not been a success, but it reminded me of the type of people who do exist in our world.

There are people who are greedy and selfish and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Application: I hated that my mum was so vulnerable and I hated that these people existed in our world and got away with it. It just wasn’t right.

That’s why I struggle with this passage in Luke 6. It acknowledges there are wicked people in our world, but it tells us to love them rather than hate them.

I read this passage and know it’s the right thing to do, but only because I’ve read this passage before and it’s so Jesus. It reminds me that faith is not meant to be fair.

Just because we are faithful to God does not mean we can get away with everything and anything. But it’s when we act in the way of Luke 6, as crazy as it sounds, it is then that we are truly obeying Christ.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I hold tightly onto all the things You have given to me. Help me to hold these lightly and only strive to honour You through what I have. Amen.

What part of this passage is hardest for you?
