Terrible Christian Cliches

This is often said by well-meaning people

Explore: There’s a terrible Christian cliche that is often recited when someone is going through a hard time: God won’t give you more than you can handle.

This is often said by well-meaning people to encourage someone who is facing a challenge. While it is meant to be supportive, it makes the recipient feel weak and useless as they look at their lives and feel they have been given way more than they can handle.

Application: The truth is life does bring us great challenges. And there are times when we feel they will overwhelm us.

When King David reflected on his life he noticed times that he faced great challenges, ones that “were too strong for me”. I think, just like David, it’s ok to admit there are some things in life that are too great for us to handle.

The thing we need to understand is that it is not God who keeps piling these great troubles upon us, but it is Him who holds us close when the world comes tumbling down around us. It is in these times when we can call to our God, our rock, our fortress, our deliverer, our refuge, our shield, our stronghold, and our Saviour.

Prayer: Lord, You are the One in whom we can take refuge. Guide me, protect me and carry me through the times of darkness and despair. Amen.

What is the greatest challenge you have ever faced?
