Supportive Parents

You can only imagine her response!

Luke 1:67-80

Reference: And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, (‭Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭76‬ NIV)

Explore: When I was 12, I decided I wanted to be a mechanic. My mother had studied medicine at an English university and was now a successful doctor running her own business. You can only imagine her response!

And yet, she was nothing but encouraging. I’m sure behind my back she prayed fervently that I would change my mind! But to my face she showed interest and helped me to explore my options.

At the time I thought this was what all parents did. But as I grew up I realised how fortunate I was to have such supportive parents.

Application: I love the prophecy Zechariah receives over his son. He foresees the impact he is going to have and delights in his future. He isn’t fixated on whether he’ll take on the family business, make lots of money or have many children. It’s in what John can do for God that he sees his true importance.

We all want what is best for our children, but we need to realise the best is not necessarily what the world considers top priority. The best we can have is to live as children of God, obedient to Him and striving to fulfil His word. That is worth rejoicing over.

Prayer: Lord, may we be encouragers of the children in our lives. Let us bring the good out in others and help to inspire them to follow You. Amen.

Who encouraged you as a child?
