That being said, not everyone shares my appreciation.
Reference: For you, Lord, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, (Psalm 116:8 NIV)
Explore: Strictly Ballroom is one of my favourite movies of all time. But that wasn’t always the case.
The first time I saw the movie I was a young teenager and it was screening at the Civic Hall of the small country town I grew up in. Not the best acoustics, but that wasn’t the problem.
This Baz Luhrmann Australian classic is filled with humour that takes the mickey out of the characters and the ballroom world. And I was too young to fully understand.
It wasn’t until I was much older, and had more experience with this kind of humour, that I truly got its brilliance. That being said, not everyone shares my appreciation.
There are some who love this film as much as I do and struggle to tear themselves away when it’s on the screen.
There are others who find it over the top and silly. There are still others who have never seen it and have no desire to do so.
Even though it is the same movie, people experience it in different ways.
Application: It’s the same when it comes to our experience of God. Some people love God so much they commit their lives to Him, while others haven’t heard a lot, but want nothing to do with Him.
Same God, different experience.
If you have had a positive experience of God (maybe you felt peace after a prayer or found great companionship with other believers) then you are likely to be favourable towards God. However, if you have a negative experience of faith (maybe you felt bored during sermons or didn’t feel you got direction when you called out for help) then you are likely to turn your back on God.
No one can challenge your experience with God, but it can be a great way to share your faith. When you talk about the ways God has impacted your life, others cannot refute the impact He has had on you.
The Psalmists often spoke of their experience of God and for the next thousands of years people have been getting inspiration from their words. We can be the psalmists of the 21st century. Don’t hesitate to share your experience of God so that others can connect with Him too.
Prayer: Lord, You connect with us in so many different ways. May we help others know of Your relationship through the stories we tell. Amen.
What has been a recent experience of God for you?
