Stormy Seas

It wasn’t until I was lying horizontal that I stopped looking green.

Psalm 107:1-43

Reference: v.29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I have not spent a great deal of time out at sea, but the short spurts of time I have spent have had a mixed reaction from my stomach.

The first night I spent on a refurbished Tall Ship my stomach was none too pleased. It wasn’t until I was lying horizontal that I stopped looking green.

After that uncomfortable night I seemed to get my sea legs and coped quite well for the next few days.

Recently I was on a large cruise ship and it wasn’t until the end of the journey that my body was struggling with the rolling seas. Even on this huge vessel I was rocked back and forth uncomfortably and was quite glad to place my feet on solid ground.

Neither of these times did I experience a fierce storm, and yet, my desire to be removed from the seas was very high.

Application: I cannot imagine what it would have been like thousands of years ago on a ship in a storm. I’m pretty sure they would not have had food stored hygienically and the protection from the waves would not have been as substantial as what we have now.

It’s no surprise that believers called out to God when they were in this situation. He heard their cry and came to their aid.

There are times in our own lives when we hit troubled waters. It may be a relationship breakdown, ill health, or a tragic accident. No matter what we experience we know that we can call out to our Saviour for help.

Just like He helped the sailors on the seas thousands of years ago, He is also able to still your storm to a whisper and bring you to safety.

Prayer: Lord, there are times when the storm is so great that we are unable to see dry land. Help us to rely on You during these times and look to You for help. Amen.

What storm do you have in your life at the moment?
