Stick Your Head In The Sand

The problem when you hit rock bottom, and want to stick your head in the sand, is that you end up just banging your head against the rocks

Psalm 73:1-28

Reference: v.16-17a I tried to think this problem through, but it was too difficult for me… (17) until I went into your Temple. (Good News Version Bible)

Explore: ‘I just wanted to shut the door and make everything go away.’ Do you ever have those moments? It’s like the whole world is crashing down on your head and you just want to bury your head in the sand and wait for the world to move on.  These life-destroying moments can come about due to a range of reasons: bad decisions, financial trouble, relationship breakdown, gossip, or betrayal. And when you hit rock bottom, you’re not sure whether you’ll ever be able to pick yourself up again.  When we do get so low our reaction is often to stick our heads in the sand. The problem when you hit rock bottom, and want to stick your head in the sand, is that you end up just banging your head against the rocks… it only makes the situation worse!

Application: King David had a number of these situations.  Things weren’t going so well for him and when he looked around at other people, they seemed to be doing so much better than him. He writes, ‘I tried to think this problem through, but it was too difficult for me…’ It all seemed too hard. King David could have just stuck his head in the sand (or banged his head against the rocks) but instead he made one of his wisest decisions… ‘I went into your Temple.’ When the world seemed too hard for King David, he went to God. So often when things get difficult we shun God and almost blame Him for what is happening in our lives. But for King David, when everything was too difficult, he turned to God and received understanding.

Prayer: Lord God, forgive us when we turn away from You in difficult times.  May we be faithful to You during the good times and the bad. Amen.

What challenges are you facing today? Are you heading to the ‘Temple’?
