It must be human nature to push important things back
Reference: Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.” “Then tell us,” Laban said. (Genesis 24:33 NIV)
Explore: It’s easy to leave important matters to the last minute. But when that happens they can easily become forgotten.
One of my boys struggles to eat his vegetables. If he eats them at the beginning, mixed in with all the other food he enjoys, then the whole meal gets eaten.
If, however, he leaves them until the end I know it will take great encouragement for them to actually be eaten.
I must admit I am the same when it comes to exercise. If I am able to go for a walk or a jog first thing in the morning then I get it accomplished. However, if my days activities require me to have an early start, then the exercise rarely gets completed at the end of the day.
Application: It seems it must be human nature to push important things back, allowing the possibility for them to be forgotten or missed. In Genesis, Abraham’s servant was not going to allow that to happen.
He had important news to give to Rebekah’s family and, although he must have been very hungry from his journey, he was not about to let a meal get in the way of his purpose.
What is it that often interrupts your good intentions? Is it sleep, as you can’t get up early enough to accomplish everything?
Is it your fear of looking foolish that holds you back? We all have something that could stop us from completing the task our Master has set for us.
Make sure you are aware of what it is for you so that you can work on combatting your interruption and stay focussed on the task ahead.
Prayer: Lord, you are our Master and our Guide. You have called us here for a purpose. May we never sway from Your path. Amen.
What is it that often interrupts your good intentions?
