Spending Pocket Money

If they find a 5 cent piece on the ground they feel like they’ve won the jackpot!

Luke 19:11-27

Reference: “ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ (‭Luke‬ ‭19‬:‭25‬ NIV)

Explore: We have just started giving our boys pocket money on the weekend. It’s funny to see how precious each coin is to them.

They have no regard for notes yet, it’s all about the coins. If they find a 5 cent piece on the ground they feel like they’ve won the jackpot! If they look in my wallet to find $6 worth of coins they marvel at my wealth.

I remember doing the same thing with my mum. I couldn’t understand why she would have that much money and not buy lollies everyday! That was exactly what I was going to do with my money when I grew up!

Now I see things very differently. I do have much more money than my boys coin collection, but I also have the reality of paying bills and providing for a family.

Application: The parable of the Ten Minas was not foreign to me when I read it today. However, I had not realised that the crowd around the ruler questioned him giving the one Mina to the man who had ten.

Sure, this was a lot of money to them, but this man of noble birth was an even bigger ruler now. He ruled a whole nation, what was another mina?

Well, it was enough to put it in the hands of someone who was wise with his wealth. The ruler was not flippant with his resources and neither should we be.

In this parable Jesus used wealth to show responsibility, reliability and wisdom.  We are not to be wasteful or flippant with the resources He has given us. Even though He owns the whole world, He is mindful of what we care for.

Prayer: Lord, You trust all people with some of Your resources. May we be wise in what we manage. Amen.

What has God given you to invest in?
