Speak Out In Faith

I believe in God our Father

Psalm 12:1-8

Reference: “You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked,” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭12:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: Last year I was going through a particularly challenging time in our family. I really struggled to hear God in my situation and worried I was making the wrong decision.

I kept attending church as a desperate attempt to hear God and find wisdom. But week after week I heard very little that spoke into my situation.

Then we sang the song “This I Believe (The Creed)” by Hillsong. The lyrics of the chorus go:

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

These were based on a liturgy I grew up reciting regularly and it reminded me of what I do truly believe.

I hadn’t received any profound wisdom and my life situation hadn’t suddenly and miraculously changed. But I was reminded that this is the God in whom I believe.

And while I was still in conflict about my life, this song was a reminder to speak out my faith, even though I was struggling to believe.  I hadn’t yet seen the evidence, but I proclaimed I still believed.

Application: I find this same kind of declaration when I read the psalms. The writer often starts off by explaining their grave situation of enemies and conflict.

But by the end the writer is stating some truth about God. “You will keep the needy safe … You will protect us forever.”

I wonder if the writer truly believes it will happen or, like me, they are reminding themselves of who God is. And they are speaking it out as an act of faith.

I think that is the ultimate in faith – to speak it out in belief before you have any evidence to back it up.

Prayer: Lord, I believe in God our Father, I believe in Christ the Son, I believe in the Holy Spirit; Our God is three in one. I believe in the resurrection, That we will rise again, For I believe in the name of Jesus. Amen.

What do you need to speak out in faith?
