Sleepless Nights

Sleepless nights are rare for me

Luke 6:12-16

Reference: One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. (‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭12‬ NIV)

Explore: I’m writing this blog at 3:13 am. Not because I’m jet-lagged or unwell. But I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep.

For some, this is a nightly reality. But not for me. I’ve been a great sleeper from way back.

My family always tell of the story of a cousins wedding I attended when I was still in primary school. Even though the music was incredibly loud, I curled up on a seat right below one of the speakers and went to sleep.

My only justification… I was tired!

And so, sleepless nights are rare for me. And when they do come along it makes me very reflective of where I am at in my life.

Application: I wonder if Jesus was a good sleeper. He had the weight of the world on His shoulders, surely that kept Him up at night!!

There are many times we read that Jesus took time out to stop, pray and reflect. After these times He often makes bold moves in His ministry, just like in Luke 6.

After spending the night in prayer, Jesus gathers His disciples and chooses His 12. This is no flippant decision.
Jesus doesn’t spend the night reading leadership books or doing background checks on His candidates. He spends it conferring with His Heavenly Father.

I must admit, with a full time job involving travel and a family of six, I often find it hard to spend time conferring with my Heavenly Father. But when I do get the chance, it always leaves me in a better position.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for always being there for us. Even when we wake in the middle of the night, You hear our thoughts and prayers. May we take each chance that comes our way to confer with You on what is going on in our lives. Amen.
