Ezekiel 28:1-26
Reference: Your heart became proud
on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings. (Ezekiel 28:17 NIV)
Explore: A friend of mine and I both struggle to keep our weight down. Our love for cheese and chocolate seems to win over every time.
The other day we were having a chuckle about what our lives would be like if we were skinny. We were saying that we’d be able to wear any clothes we wanted because they’d all look good and fit!
While this was a very naive way of looking at ourselves, it was fun for a moment to think of a life where we were skinny and beautiful.
Application: When I read through Ezekiel 28 verse 17, I initially thought that this would never be my downfall – being proud of my beauty and splendor. I’m far from being a model and was honest enough to say, with my friend, that if I was a model I would clearly be arrogant about it.
However, although this will not be my downfall, I mustn’t get complacent. Beauty comes in many different forms, and if we use it for the wrong intent then our fall can be just as great.
While outer beauty may not be my burden, I can be selfish, greedy, and judgmental, and all of these are just as detrimental to my relationship with God. There are things in all of our lives that stop us from having a Godly character, and we must constantly be on guard to stop them from standing in the way of being great disciples of Christ.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for showing me humility, grace and love. May I strive to choose these characteristics over my selfishness and greed. Amen.
What characteristic holds you back from shining God’s light?
