Santo Cilauro

Alan was lovely and easy to chat to but there was something about him that I just couldn't put my finger on.

Job 12:1-25

Reference:  v.24 He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he makes them wander in a trackless waste. (TNIV Bible)

Explore:  At a conference I attended last year I met a guy by the name of Alan.  Alan was lovely and easy to chat to but there was something about him that I just couldn't put my finger on.  Each time I was involved in a conversation with Alan something would niggle away at me in the back of my mind.  Three days into the conference it finally clicked: Alan sounded exactly like comedian Santo Cilauro.   From then on, every time I heard Alan speak I could only think of Santo.  I would giggle along in conversations, not because Alan was saying anything particularly funny but I would be imagining Santo saying the same thing.  Because that's all I could think of when Alan was talking I almost starting treating him like I would if he really was Santo.

Application:  It's amazing how strong our hearing recognition can be.  Because I was hearing Santo's voice, even though I was not seeing him in front of me, I couldn't get him out of my mind.  Sometimes I find I do the same thing when it comes to my impression of God.  If I am feeling incredibly positive about life then I will see God as an incredibly positive Creator; if I am feeling very lonely and despondent then I will often feel that God is at a distance and waiting for me to make a move.  Depending on how I am feeling at the time, I will place those thoughts on the character of God.  Job did the same thing when he was in a place of despair.  Because he was feeling out of control he reminded his friends about the power and control of God.  While all that he said about God was very true, his explanation of God did not sum Him up completely.  There is so much more to God than just one feeling or emotion that we are experiencing at one time.  As we go through life and experience different emotions then we see different sides to God revealed.  We must not confine God to what we are feeling at the time but understand that He is all of that and more.

Prayer:  Lord, so often we place you in a box so that we can try to get our heads around your enormity.  May we learn to experience you in so many different ways but not confine you to our own understanding.  Amen.

How are you feeling right now?  What does that teach you about God?
