I knew I’d done the wrong thing, but I was still furious
Reference: I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols. (Ezekiel 14:5 NIV)
Explore: As I child I used to hate cleaning my teeth. Sure, I hated going to the dentist to get fillings even more, but I still resisted brushing my teeth every morning and evening.
One morning, when I was in primary school, I had left for school without brushing my teeth. I had walked nearly the whole way to school when Mum pulled up in the car next to me.
She was not impressed that I hadn’t cleaned my teeth and demanded I get in the car and head all the way back home to do it. I couldn’t believe it! I knew I’d done the wrong thing, but I was still furious that I had to walk all the way back to school just for my stupid teeth.
25 years later I get it. I am now very thankful for my healthy teeth and I am now the one constantly on my boys’ backs to have proper dental hygiene.
Application: Why did my mother bother getting in the car to come and get me? It wasn’t just to make my life difficult, it was so I would have a better future.
And over and over again in the Bible we read of God confronting people, not to make their lives difficult, but so they would have a better future.
There is no greater place than in God’s presence. It’s just a shame that He knows that and has to keep reminding us about it.
It’s easy enough to justify our disobedient behaviour, but God will continue to drive up beside us and remind us of what is best.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your persistence with us. May we always remember that our hope is in You and our future will look brighter if You are there. Amen.
What good things do you resist doing in your own life?
