Real Life Story

When I see a movie has been based on a real life story I start to get nervous.

2 Samuel 13:1-39

Reference: “Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went.” ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭13:19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: When I read books or watch movies I tend to shy away from the harsh stories of reality; wanting to get swept away with a lovely, pleasant plot line instead.

This means that stories about war or prison are all a bit confronting. When I see a movie has been based on a real life story I start to get nervous.

I know this means I miss out on some truly inspiring stories, so maybe I should push myself out of my comfort zone a little more in this area.

Application: I’m afraid that when I read through the Bible I am unable to dodge all the challenging stories. I guess I should have been wary of the whole book seeing as it is all based on real life stories!!

When I read confronting passages like 2 Samuel 13 it reminds me that life can often be very confronting. Real life can bring pain and suffering and there are times when we have to sit with that.

It’s amazing that a book written thousands of years ago can still reflect the thoughts and feelings we experience today. Our culture may be different and the leadership of our countries may be different, but God remains the same.

It’s ok to enjoy a break from reality every now and again, but let’s not forget that God is in all situations, both good and bad.

Prayer: Lord, life can sometimes bring challenges we’re not sure we can handle. Be with us. Stay close to us. Give us Your comfort and Your love. Amen.

When have you been confronted by reality?
