When the thing you desire is something substantial, you are willing to put a priority on obtaining it, even if it takes years.
Reference: That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. (1 Timothy 4:10 NIV)
Explore: If you really want something, you will focus on it and work hard to get it.
Your desire may come in the form of a type of career. If you really want it, then you will study hard, learn all the relevant information and jump through all the hoops to gain access to a job in your desired field.
Maybe your desire is an item you’d like to purchase. You research the item, find the best price, save your money, renege on other items so you have the resources you require, then – when the price is right – you go and purchase it.
When the thing you desire is something substantial, you are willing to put a priority on obtaining it, even if it takes years.
Application: There is a great deal about our faith that comes easily. Often friendships come easily with other believers as we hold similar values and, I must say, that accepting God’s love and grace is easy as He gives it so freely.
However, growing close to God is a lifetime commitment. It’s not something you save up for or study for four years to obtain.
Because of this long term process, we often get lazy or let it slip in priority. We may throw up a 30 second prayer before we go to bed or forego a church service because the week’s been so busy.
No matter what you have strived for in the past, a relationship with God is THE most important thing you could ever work towards. And we mustn’t let it slip because we’re busy or tired or on holidays. God is accessible everywhere and at all times. Whether you connect with Him is up to you and your priorities.
Prayer: Lord, there is nothing more valuable in this world than being close to You. Forgive us when we change our priorities and focus. Amen.
What will you do today to prioritise God?
