Parallel Parking

When we do things really well we love for others to know

Psalm 49:1-20

Reference: v.1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world (TNIV Bible)

Explore: Have you ever noticed that every time you do a perfect parallel park you are always in the car on your own?  But then when someone is in the car with you and you have to park parallel to the curb you always stuff it up and either hit the curb or park six metres away from the side of the road!!  When we do things really well we love for others to know, however when we stuff things up we would rather that kind of news stays hidden away.

Application: When it comes to my faith in Christ I’m never sure whether I should shout it from the mountaintops or keep it hidden and personal.  It’s easy to be open about my faith when I’m talking to other believers.  However when it comes to talking to people who don’t believe in God I’m always worried that my enthusiasm is going to put them off.  It’s funny that my proclamation of my faith seems to depend on whether I think I’ll get a positive response or not.  Imagine if that was God’s reaction, He only called us His children when we were perfect and not stuffing anything up!  I think He would be a pretty lonely father.  While we do need to be mindful not to push people into believing God like we do, it’s also important for us not to shy away from telling people about our faith.  Like the Psalmist we need to proclaim it to all people, through our words and our actions, and be clear with all people who we believe in and who we follow.  May we not just proclaim Christ as our Lord when people will look at us favorably but may we have the courage to speak of our faith at all times.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for hiding my faith when it makes me unacceptable to this world.  May I be bold and proclaim that You are my God.  Amen.

When do you find it challenging to proclaim Christ as Lord?
