The Pain of the Faithful

On the day her brother suddenly died, she thought her whole world was falling apart.

Psalm 44:1-26

Reference: All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant. (Psalm 44:17 NIV)

Explore: Today I heard the testimony of a lady called Amy. She was a faithful Christian who didn’t just turn up to church, but was heavily involved in the church’s outreach and ministry.

On the day her brother suddenly died, she thought her whole world was falling apart. But in the same season, her husband lost his job and her father became gravely ill.

Some would say that the pain Amy experienced was not fair. She was a faithful servant of God, why would He allow so much suffering to happen to her?

But Amy’s faith did not waver. She knew her God was faithful and, although this season was so difficult she felt she could hardly breathe, she also knew God would carry her through.

Application: Unfortunately, our faith does not preclude us from all suffering. God loves us and cares for us but we still live in a fallen world.

We are not alone in our pain. Even the psalmist, thousands of years ago, felt that he had served God well and yet he still experienced great grief.

While we may not be exempt from grief, we can choose to step out our journey with a God who loves us and is there to carry us through. Life is not always easy, but we can know that God is still beside us.

Prayer: Lord, when our world crumbles it can be hard to see You. May we hold firmly to our faith and remember You are faithful and true. Amen.

What struggles are you facing?
