My small brain can not hold the memory of even a whole month, and whenever I turn a new page in my diary it's like a brand new week every time.
Genesis 17:1-27
Reference: v.21 "But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year." (NIV Bible)
Explore: I am totally bound to my diary. It's not funky, electronic or super-techno. It is a standard paper diary with a week per page… but I am still bound by it. If I need to remember anything at all, I will write it in my diary and you can be 99% sure that it will be done. However, if it doesn't go in the diary it's like the idea become vapour that slips into the atmosphere and is never thought of again! As I mentioned, in my diary I have one week per page. At the beginning of each week I turn over the page and see what I have already scheduled in for that week. Most weeks I seem to surprise myself with something, "Oh, I'd forgotten about that appointment"… "Ah, I remember when I wrote that in." Clearly I only live life one week at a time. My small brain can not hold the memory of even a whole month, and whenever I turn a new page in my diary it's like a brand new week every time.
Application: While I only live life one week at a time, God does not have such a simple planning structure. When He spoke to Abraham about Sarah conceiving, He was looking a year ahead. But more than that, when God made the covenant with Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation, God was looking many years ahead. God is not limited like my small brain that can only fathom one week at a time. God holds all of time in His understanding. We know that we can trust in Him, who not only understands our yesterday, embraces us in the present but holds in His loving, powerful hands our future.
Prayer: Father God, You hold our lives in Your hands. May I honor You with the time that I have. Amen.
What plans do you have for the future? What plans does God have in store for you?
