Old Dog, New Tricks

Even though we forewarn people of the danger, there is still that one person in every trip who does not heed our advice!

Proverbs 26:1-28

Reference: “Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭26:17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: In Australia many people own dogs as pets. While you still need to be careful when approaching another person’s dog, it is likely they have been well trained and will be obedient.

It is for this reason that, when taking people overseas for work or missions trips, I often have to warn them about dogs. Unlike in Australia, in developing countries you will often find stray dogs roaming the street who have not been trained and may not be obedient.

Unfortunately, due to the conditions of the country, these dogs may often carry diseases and can end up being a great threat to those who get too close.

However, even though we forewarn people of the danger of going near dogs, there is still that one person in every trip who does not heed our advice!

Application: While I may not foolish enough to go near an unknown animal, I have to admit I often go near situations that are not healthy for me.

Engaging in conversation with someone I know gossips will only lead me down the same path. Fantasising about someone I don’t have to live with only amplifies the issues I may be having at home.

None of us make perfect decisions all of the time, but reading through Proverbs has certainly been a great reminder of how we should strive to live our lives. As we read, there are some people we can put to verses. But more than not we can add our own names to the foolish list.

Praise God we have a gracious saviour who stood in our place when we were foolish and offers us a clean start to try again.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I put myself in a place that only leads to strife. Thank You for showing me how I should live. Amen.

How foolish have you been lately?
