New Year’s Resolution

It’s good to regularly stop and ask yourself, ‘Where am I heading?’

1 Corinthians 9:1-27

Reference:  v.26  Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. (TNIV Bible)

Explore:  I’ve never really been one to set New Year’s resolutions.  There are all those statistics saying that the majority of people who set resolutions have given up on them before the end of January and I could possibly be in that category too, but instead I just don’t set the resolutions in the first place.  However, that doesn’t mean that I am not driven to do better.  I think the start of the year is a great chance for reflection and reevalution.  There are also other good times to stop and assess where you are heading: at the beginning of a season; at the conclusion of some study; on a birthday or anniversary; in the lead up to a reunion.  It’s good to regularly stop and ask yourself, ‘Where am I heading?’

Application:  God did not create us to live aimless lives.  He gave each of us gifts and abilities to use to bring Him glory.  If you feel like you are living aimlessly then maybe now is a good time to reassess where your live is heading.  We can glorify God through our work, our family, our churches, our hobbies and our friends.  But if we are just filling our own needs through these areas then our life will be aimless.  God did not create us so that we could have whatever we need.  We were created to bring God glory.  And when we do that, in whatever way God has gifted us, that is when we will really feel that we are running with purpose.

Prayer:  Lord, many of us do not know what Your purpose is for our lives.  May we put aside the time to explore what You have in store for us and be brave to make the hard decisions to give something new a go.  Amen.

What are you aiming to achieve at the moment?  How is it that your life is giving glory to God?
