I do love someone who is so passionate about something that money becomes second priority.
Reference: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Luke 16:13 NIV)
Explore: I had heard along the grapevine that a friend had quit his job. He was an incredibly talented guy and this was clearly a major decision he’d made.
On one hand I was surprised because I got the sense he loved what he did and yet, on the other hand, I felt he had greater potential and hoped he would discover something more.
When I finally got to hear the journey from the horse’s mouth I was very impressed. My friend is wanting to start his own business and didn’t feel he could do justice to his old job while working so hard towards his new venture.
I loved his integrity and I admired his willingness to risk a regular pay check for a while in order to fully focus in one area.
I’m all for planning well financially, but I do love someone who is so passionate about something that money becomes second priority.
Application: Money is a significant part of our lives but it’s not fulfilling enough to base our whole purpose on. However, when we become focused on money we struggle to see the importance of other areas in our lives.
The Bible speaks about money a great deal. One of its most well known comments is the verse above – you can’t serve both God and money.
I know people who do serve money and they rarely show the character of God. Let us be clear with where our focus is and with what we aim to achieve in life.
Prayer: Lord, when we get caught up in all the desires of this world it’s easy for us to lose our focus. May we set our eyes on You and not be distracted by the fake light of the world. Amen.
Where is your focus?
