When the mounds of soil and mulch were tipped off the truck I thought we would be shoveling for the rest of eternity!
Reference: v.1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: I don’t think I’ve ever been so physically tired as the week we did the landscaping at our new house.
Having just had the house built, we started with a blank canvas – well, a clay-muddy canvas! We dug channels to place the surrounding sleepers in, we moved rocks and weeds, and then we had mountains of soil and mulch delivered.
When the mounds of soil and mulch were tipped off the truck I thought we would be shoveling for the rest of eternity! There were a number of us helping, with shovel and wheelbarrow in hand, and yet, the mound seemed to take forever to go down.
Finally, hours after we had begun, the mounds had been dispersed and our garden looked amazing – but not after a great deal of backbreaking work.
Application: While our mounds of soil and mulch seemed huge, they would only have been a couple of metres high. To move a whole mountain we would have needed hundreds of workers and some decent kind of machinery too.
Whilst doing our landscaping I was reminded how challenging it is to make a significant change. You can chip away for an extended period of time and still the view looks the same. I wish I was as unwavering in my faith. If I truly trusted in the Lord, with all my heart, then the Bible says I would be as unshakeable as Mount Zion.
Trying to shake a mountain would take some pretty decent force, and yet, I don’t often feel that secure. When I do trust solely in God, I know I can handle a great deal more of stress and concern, as He becomes my mountain.
There is nothing that can shake God, nothing that could turn Him from us, nothing that could make Him love us less. So why do I struggle to trust in Him?
It’s good to be reminded of God’s strength and endurance. If you start to doubt, go dig up a pile of dirt to remind yourself how firm a mountain is.
That is God’s promise to us. He is as constant as a mountain. If we trust in Him then we become tethered to His mountain and as unmovable as He.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we falter in trusting in You. Thank you for the firm foundation You give to each of us. May we hold to You as our Lord and King, and never wander from Your strength and love. Amen.
How strong is your trust in God today? Do you need to reconnect with the Mighty Mountain?
