This situation led me to do something I’ve never done before…
Reference: But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. (2 Chronicles 26:16 NIV)
Explore: A couple of weeks ago I got myself into a bit of a bind. Something significant had happened in my life and I suddenly found myself in over my head.
I had limited capacity to care for the rest of my family as I usually do and my closest support network were all away or previously occupied. This situation led me to do something I’ve never done before… ask for help!
Ok, so there was one time in grade 3 maths that I asked the teacher for help, but apart from that, the times are limited! This may be a slight exaggeration, but I’m known as a fairly capable person and I’m usually the one helping others rather than the other way around.
But, in this case, it was not to be. And so, I sucked up my pride and asked for help. The assistance I received was amazing and humbling.
Application: It’s ridiculous for me to think that I can do everything on my own, but so often my pride gets the best of me and I become all Miss Independent. I don’t possess every skill known to man, I do have many failings and there are many people out there more competent than I.
King Uzziah started out so well. But, unfortunately, he didn’t think to keep himself in check. While he ruled the nation there were certain things that even he was restricted by.
It’s good to know our strengths, but it’s important to keep everything in check so we don’t get ahead of ourselves. I mean, who are we kidding? God does all things to perfection and we think we’re awesome in some way.
We all have the tendency to over inflate our opinion of ourselves and look down on others. It’s good to know our place in God’s kingdom and focus on Him rather than the rest of the world.
Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I put myself first and forget to honour You in the right way. Amen.
When have you let pride go?
