Make Your Bed

I recently heard former US Navy Admiral, William H McRaven, talk about how you can change the world.

“So if you wanna change the world start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day.
“It will give you a small sense of pride and will encourage you to do another task and another and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.
“Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right you’ll never be able to do the big things right.
“And if, by chance, you have a miserable day you will come home to a bed that is made. That you made. And a made bed gives you the encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”
I don’t know if the former Admiral knew it but he was teaching a good Biblical lesson. It was actually Jesus who said to His disciples that if they were faithful in the small things then they would be trusted with much.
So often we just want to jump straight to the big things – we want the big salary, the significant recognition, the important responsibilities. And yet, we haven’t shown dedication and fruitfulness in the small things yet.
Those who focus on the small things are often those who understand the importance of the bigger more significant tasks. Dedicating ourselves to the small things is more about our own personal growth than it is in completing a task, just as Admiral McRaven referred to.
We all have small tasks to complete in our lives. Let’s apply ourselves as if they were the significant tasks and we will see ourselves grow and develop into people who are worthy of big tasks.
Lord, may I see You in every task I complete. May I show Your character whether the task is large or small, simple or significant. Amen.
What small tasks do you have to complete today?
